Your Don’t-Forget Beauty List

Red bow on finger1. Clean out your make-up bag.

When makeup has expired, the color can change and go on blotchy. Even worse than that, it can harbor all sorts of bacteria that you don’t want near your face. As a general rule of thumb, toss mascaras and eyeliners after three months, creams and liquids after a year, and powders and compacts after two years. Write the date on the back of your products when you first get them home to help you remember when it’s time to toss them!

2. Get a facial at least 4 times a year.

Over time, dead skin cells build up on the skin creating a barrier your skin care products can’t penetrate the way they need to. Facials give you a deep-clean that you just can’t get at home. It also gives you a chance to discuss your skin care needs and concerns with your skin care professional who may be able to recommend better products or a better regimen for your skin type.

3. Moisturize on your lunch break.

Most of us stop feeling the benefits of the moisturizer we apply in the morning by the time we go for lunch. So take a few moments midday to apply a few drops of Peter Thomas Roth Ultra-Lite Oil-Free Moisturizer or spritz your face with a hydrating mist of Avene Thermal Spring Water. These products replenish lost moisture but are fast-absorbing so they won’t ruin your make-up!

4. Apply sunscreen—even if the only “outside” you’ll see is from the inside of your car.

Research shows that driving may contribute to the increased likelihood of skin cancer on the left side of the body. So before you grab your keys, grab a tube of Elta MD UV Facial Broad-Spectrum SPF 30+ (also available in a 4oz jar) and apply generously to your face. For instant non-greasy protection on your arms and hands, try Elta MD UV Aero Broad-Spectrum SPF 45. It sprays on white, delivering an even, accurate application, then dries clear.

5. Wipe down your phone.

Your cell phone is a breeding ground for bacteria. All those germs land right on your cheek and jawline every time you chat away, causing pimples and irritation. To keep your phone (and face) bacteria-free, wipe it down with an antibacterial wipe once a day.

6. Extend down.

Your neck and chest need TLC too! Whether it’s with your Clarisonic Aria Sonic Skin Cleansing Brush or your favorite facial cream/mask, extend your daily regimen all the way down to the top of your chest to prevent crepey skin and to improve the texture and tone of the neck and décolletage.
